1. Bet the Farm on Rutgers - 12/3/2008 Earlier this year, it was suggested by several writers across the lower 48 and myself that possibly Greg Schiano, the Rutgers coach, had made a bad career move and not moved on from Rutgers after celebrated 11-2 season in 2006. As we are all aware, timing is extremely important in life. Last season was not expected to be as positive as the previous year with too many defensive players graduated, and the Scarlet Knights went to a second consecutive bowl game for the first time ever and got a pat on the head for finishing 8-5.

2. North Carolina visits Detroit City - 12/3/2008 Top-ranked North Carolina will hope to make the first of two trips this season to Ford Field for the 2008-09 campaign, when they face Michigan State this evening in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Tar Heels were fresh off a Maui Invitational title conquest and returned to Chapel Hill to run roughshod over UNC-Ashville 116-48 this past Sunday. 3. Making Money Betting the NHL - 12/2/2008 The NHL season is about a quarter of the way complete and patterns have been established. 4. ACC/Big Ten Hoops – A Betting Challenge - 12/2/2008 The Big Ten jetted to 1-0 lead with Wisconsin taking down Virginia Tech 74-72 yesterday and based on the previous results of this event, they better relish it while they can. Tonight five more games will be played, with Duke at Purdue being the showcase contest. If and it is a really big if, the Big Ten wants a realistic chance to finally win The Challenge, they have to hold serve as home favorites tonight, being favored in three of the five games on their home court.

5. Looking Ahead in Rearview Mirror in the NFL - 12/1/2008 Go ahead, I dare you to guess what the Denver Broncos season ending record will be, let alone how they will perform over the next four weeks against the spread. The 2008 Broncos seem to be a mix of Britney, Lindsey, and Paris all wrapped into one. A closer look at the team is more confounding than Mike Shanahan having a darkly tanned face in December living in Rocky Mountain country. Denver is in first place in the AFC West, which is akin to Arizona being in the top spot in the other West division.

6. Big Ten-ACC Challenge Opens Tonight - 12/1/2008 This made for TV event has been about has been about as close as Notre Dame and USC football game of late, with the Atlantic Coast Conference winning this event all nine years of its existence. The one-sidedness is shown with only Michigan State of the Big Ten having produced a winning record (5-3) in the matchup. Tonight is the opening tilt and the team from the Midwest would love to start their conference with a win and at least hold the lead for a day, but will have to do so on the road.

7. Texans Host First Monday Night Matchup - 12/1/2008 In the first Monday night game ever at Reliant Stadium, Houston will go for its third straight win against Jacksonville on its home turf. While both of these teams appear headed home in January, recent get-togethers between these two have been interesting. Case in point: The Jaguars won the earlier meeting in Week 3 on a 37-yard field goal by Josh Scobee in overtime to prevail, 30-27, failing to cover the 6.5-point spread on Sept.28.

8. College Football Betting Saturday - 11/28/2008 Is it really possible that Oregon State will be playing in the Rose Bowl and not during the regular season for the first time in 44 years? For the Beavers, the most treacherous of opponents, an in-state rival with hated in their hearts is looking to spoil an improbable journey. (Free Foxsheet for state of Oregon war) Florida and Alabama each have rivalry game tune-ups before the big SEC title game showdown. So much for USC and Notre Dame being a big deal this season, the only stories here are Charley Weis’ continued employment in South Bend or to give or take the 30+ points. Something seems a little fishy about Oklahoma and Oklahoma State line, watch how this plays out Saturday night in Stillwater.

9. Pittsburgh Home Dog in Backyard Brawl - 11/27/2008 The “Backyard Brawl” may not have the shocking results of Pittsburgh ending West Virginia’s national title hopes last season, nevertheless Big East title and BCS bid are still in the mix. Pittsburgh lost at Cincinnati 28-21 last week, setting up this bruising affair. Pittsburgh will go bowling somewhere this season, ending a four-year drought, the last three under coach Dave Wannstedt. Fans impatiently waited for top-line recruiting classes to mature to the point this team now has reached.

10. Maui Invitational – Blog Style - Wednesday Update - 11/26/2008 Notre Dame was impressive for 38:30 minutes against Texas, until they couldn’t make free throws and had difficulties with the Longhorns full court press. The quality of basketball was exceptional for so early in the season. In surveying different forums, Notre Dame was a popular play with the points and they showed why. It starts with a load of experience, having three seniors and two juniors in the starting lineup.

11. Maui Invitational – Blog Style -Tuesday Update - 11/25/2008 No. 6 Texas clamped down hard on St. Joseph’s, in the last 30 minutes of the game, limiting them to 29.3 percent for the game in 68-50 win, covering the spread easily. The Longhorns had excellent ball pressure and forced the Hawks into several miscues, which could be blamed on early season and tenacious Texas defense. Rick Barnes team also did a masterful job keeping the lane clogged and if they continue to improve, they could well be in Detroit come early April.

13. Texas Favored to Mash Texas A&M - 11/26/2008 Texas had their hand dealt to them and now all they can do is go out and feast on rival Texas A&M on Thanksgiving evening and leave a strong impression. With Texas Tech losing, the Longhorns moved to number two in the latest BCS ratings. Texas really can not control their destiny directly, but an impressive blowout before a stuffed and bloated Thanksgiving audience, can only help them with voters looking on. Their best case scenario is to whip the Aggies like leftover mashed potatoes and hope Oklahoma wins an extremely close contest at Oklahoma State, hoping the voters leave the top three positions just like they are and receive Big 12 championship game berth against Missouri.

15. Texas Tech at Oklahoma Betting Preview - 11/22/2008 Their may be encounters that will mean more this weekend to fans of particular teams, but no game will have greater importance on the national scope than this Big 12 battle. Texas Tech can end some the drama by taking down once-beaten Oklahoma and essentially winning the Big 12 South, with just Baylor at home and holding all the tie-breakers. Oklahoma can screw up the Big 12 big time by roughing up the unbeaten Red Raiders and if they win by 10 or more points at Oklahoma State next week, they would probably gather enough support to play in conference championship game, even though Texas had beaten the Sooners and they would have the same 11-1 record. 16. College Football Betting Saturday - 11/21/2008 It’s been forever it seems since the fourth Saturday in November wasn’t about the importance of a Michigan-Ohio State conflict, but like you money be safer in your pocket than in a bank, it is true. The Penn State and Michigan State contest has larger implications in the Big Ten to end this season. The “Holy War” is bigger than ever with Utah trying to close the door on perfect season and nab another BCS berth against hated rival BYU. Though Saturday’s meeting will not decide the Big East champion, both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati control their own destiny, with the winner having a huge leg up.

17. The NBA on TNT Wagering Options - 11/19/2008 The Detroit Pistons are getting back to their annoying ways, no, not the bullying days of Isiah (no that wasn’t me) Thomas, Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn, it’s the team that plays in your face defense when it needs to and takes down teams when they are playing well. Just this past week, Detroit (8-3, 6-5 ATS) handed the Lakers their first loss of the season on their home court 106-95 and last night, the Pistons clipped Cleveland’s eight-game winning streak 96-89, with a 30-21 final stanza.

18. College Football Rivalries – Part 1 - 11/20/2008 One of the many great aspects of college football is the end of the season when the most bitter of rivalries get together to renew those emotions from the past. This is the game that mostly involves in-state or neighboring state universities that stir the emotion of every player and alumni alike. Because of proximity, many fans either attended these schools or were cultured by their parents to develop an affiliation with the beloved institution of hirer learning. The passion runs deep in these situations and this becomes an emotional encounter that is a tipping point, often for one calendar year when the next game is played and the drama unfolds all over again.

19. 17 Reasons to Watch Miami at Georgia Tech - 11/19/2008 The ACC caught a ton of grief in early September for playing ugly football, as Clemson, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Florida State all lost games they were expected to win. Since that time, the conference has really come around, with 14-2 non-conference record, covering the spread 11 times. For pure enjoyment or agony (depending what side you’re on), Atlantic Coast Conference football as been as entertaining as, hmm, ACC basketball. With that said, here are 17 reasons to watch tonight’s ACC contest.

20. Beware of Double Digit NFL Favorites - 11/20/2008 Aside from the day of the week this game is being played, will anything be different from the first meeting between the Bengals and Steelers? Not unless Carson Palmer makes a miraculous recovery and suddenly starts at quarterback for Cincinnati having the same abilities as he possessed in 2005, the Bengals last trip to the postseason. He missed the Oct. 19 meeting when the Steelers crushed Cincinnati 38-10 at Paul Brown Stadium. On that day, the defense led by James Harrison, LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons met at Ryan Fitzpatrick’s helmet, sacking him seven times, along with numerous other “welcome” hits, as Palmer started nursing a sore right elbow.

21. Monster MAC Football Matchup - 11/19/2008 Ball State took a closer step to completing a perfect season, with the biggest test to date coming this week. For the first time ever, the Muncie, IN University is 10-0 (6-2-1 ATS) matching the number of wins they had in 1978 (10-1). Their only previous perfect season came in 1949, when they played eight games. Quarterback Nate Davis is a special performer, but the addition of running back MiQuale Lewis has added a real punch to offensive balance.

24. Two Young Quarterbacks Wing it in Buffalo - 11/16/2008 As far as Mr. Quinn’s long anticipated first game at quarterback in the NFL, Brady earned an ‘A’ for the Browns last Thursday night but the rest of the bunch got a failing grade as Cleveland (3-6, 5-4 ATS) slipped further out of playoff contention with a crippling 34-30 loss to visiting Denver. The Browns second collapse in five days was no fault of Quinn, who completed 23 of 35 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns and no turnovers.

25. College Football Betting Saturday - 11/14/2008 The old Florida football coach returns for a second trip to many of his greatest triumphs. Steve Spurrier arrives in Gainesville with a ranked South Carolina club, trying to defeat what many consider the best team in the country today. (Free Foxsheet for this SEC affair) Ohio State was thought to be that team by many in August; instead they are seeking revenge at Illinois. The ACC continues to try to solve convoluted mess with North Carolina and Maryland winner staying in contention. Texas still has hopes to win the Big 12 South and can’t slip up on the road against risky Kansas club. Oregon State still has the inside track to win the Pac-10 and go to Rose Bowl for the first since 1965 and has to defeat Cal at home to keep advancing.
